When our clients purchased a late 19th century
barn near Ann Arbor full of hay bales and farm implements, it was the
furthest thing from a home. Our challenge was to make it function like
a modern residence, while preserving its original charm. We replaced
the rotting timbers, leaving their replacements (and intact originals)
exposed throughout the structure. Heating, AC and plumbing were
unobtrusively installed through the existing timber frame. Skylights
and a west wall comprised mostly of glass were carefully constructed to
provide plenty of natural light. Today four bedrooms and 3 1/2
baths are situated within the home's two levels and loft.
We preserved and reused a 19th century barn and created a modern home
