The Perkins Construction Company is committed
to seeking answers to the challenges of responsible land use. In
the wake of the 1998 defeat of a Property Development Rights ballot
proposal in Washtenaw County, the Washtenaw Smart Growth Initiative
(WSGI) was formed with the goal of building broad support for, and
educating the public about, land use alternatives being employed
in other parts of the country. Through its demonstration projects
and educational series, WSGI seeks to raise public awareness and
support for these issues.
Conceived by architect Rick Hermann and built
by The Perkins Construction Company, Mallett's Wood in Ann Arbor
is a thirty-six unit site condominium that incorporates over forty
innovations that make it unique in the marketplace.
Combining extremely efficient use of space,
high quality design and construction, and preservation of natural
features, the project has been recognized by the Ann Arbor Area
Board of Realtors in its Environmental Awareness Award, and was
chosen by WSGI as its first demonstration project.
